The accident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Athanasiou Tsigkou and Thrasyvoulou Streets. According to witness accounts and initial findings by the Traffic Police, the 12-year-old attempted to cross the street perpendicularly on his electric scooter but reportedly ran a stop sign, resulting in a collision with a passing vehicle.
The collision was severe, and the minor was thrown onto the road, sustaining serious injuries to his head, chest, and leg. Eyewitnesses reported that the child was wearing a helmet, but it was not properly fastened, causing it to fly off his head immediately after the collision.
The 12-year-old was initially transported by an EKAV ambulance to Thriassio Hospital in Elefsina, but due to the severity of his condition, it was deemed necessary to transfer him to the “Aglaia Kyriakou” Children’s Hospital.
Doctors immediately performed a lengthy surgical procedure to treat the severe head injuries he had sustained. Additionally, fractures and serious injuries were found in his chest and lower limbs. After surgery, the child was admitted to the ICU, where he remains intubated. The attending physicians describe the next 24 hours as extremely critical for his recovery.
The incident has shocked the local community, with residents describing scenes of panic and distress immediately after the accident, when they saw the child lying in a pool of blood on the road.
The Traffic Police are examining the video footage that captured the moment the electric scooter collided with the vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
