Olympiacos is entering the final stretch of its efforts to strengthen its roster, and one of its top priorities is the center of the defense. The “Red-and-Whites” are very close to finalizing the signing of Zinedin Smilović, who is set to become the fourth piece of the center-back puzzle ahead of the new season.
The Swedish center back from Sandefjord has been on the Piraeus club’s radar for some time, and talks between the two sides have progressed significantly. Reports indicate that the deal is in an advanced stage, with the player viewing a move to Greece favorably.
The addition of Smailović will bolster a defensive line that already includes Retsos, Pirolá, and the imminent return of Karmo. José Luis Medilibar wants to have more options available in central defense, as the new season will bring increased demands both in Greece and in Europe.
At the club, they believe that Smailović can provide immediate solutions and increase competition in the backline. For this reason, they are pushing to finalize the deal as soon as possible so the player can join the team from the start of summer training.
At the same time, Olympiacos officials have set a goal of completing a total of four key signings by July 3. The Piraeus-based club wants to be as ready as possible when preseason training begins in the Netherlands, having already established the core of the team.
