The National Council is convening today at 10 a.m. under the chairmanship of the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, to be briefed on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue following the recent visit to Cyprus by the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Olguín.
As President Christodoulides stated on June 12 following a meeting with Ms. Olguín, we are at a critical juncture regarding the Cyprus issue. The President of the Republic also said that all the leaders of the parties represented in the House of Representatives have been invited to the National Council meeting, and that at the same time he will brief the leaders of parties that are no longer in the House of Representatives but were previously members of the National Council.
The President described the coming weeks, leading up to Ms. Olgin’s return to Cyprus, expressing his hope that there would be internal consensus regarding his goal of convening an expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue.
He also reiterated his optimism “that we will achieve the goal of convening an expanded meeting, which will result in the resumption of talks.”
Following her visit to Cyprus, Ms. Olgin held meetings in Turkey and Greece with the foreign ministers of both countries, and she will return to Cyprus in the coming weeks after visiting Brussels.
