Cyprus recorded a 20.5% increase in fuel and lubricant prices for private transportation in May 2026, compared with the same month in 2025, according to data published Monday by Eurostat.
The increase in Cyprus was very close to the European Union average, which stood at 20.7%. According to the agency’s data, fuel and lubricant prices rose in all EU member states on a year-over-year basis.
The largest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (33.9%), Luxembourg (32.2%), Lithuania (30.8%), and Romania (30.4%). The smallest increase was in Hungary at 3.5%, while in the remaining countries, increases ranged from 12.7% in Poland to 29.2% in France.
Eurostat notes that through February 2026, fuel and lubricant prices generally trended downward in the EU before beginning to rise in the following months.
At the European Union level, diesel prices rose by 29% in May 2026 compared to May 2025, while gasoline prices increased by 16.2%.
On a monthly basis, however, consumers in the EU saw diesel prices fall by 5.8% compared to April 2026, while gasoline prices rose by 0.8%.
In Cyprus, diesel prices fell by 1.5% between April and May 2026. The decline was smaller than the EU average and significantly lower than the larger declines recorded in Germany (-11.9%), Greece (-8.5%), Estonia (-8.4%), and Ireland (-8.1%).
In contrast, gasoline prices in Cyprus rose by 2.1% in May compared to April. This development is part of a broader trend observed across the EU, where 23 member states recorded monthly increases in gasoline prices.
The largest monthly increase in gasoline prices was recorded in Italy at 6.9%, while decreases were noted in Germany (-5.6%), Ireland (-2.0%), and Sweden (-0.7%).
