Rade Bogdanović sparked controversy with his racist comment about the World Cup match between Belgium and Iran (0-0). Prompted by Nathan Engoi’s mistake, which led to his ejection from the “Red Devils,” the Serbian former star player and current TV commentator made a racially discriminatory remark.
“At this level, being the last defender, losing a ball that’s just sitting there, and then getting sent off… “I’ve always said that these players—and I’m not a racist—but Black players don’t have the focus to last more than 60 to 80 minutes,” Bogdanović said during the live broadcast.
“I played alongside them. Sometimes we had to protect our own players from making mistakes. Modern soccer doesn’t allow for that kind of mistake at the World Cup level,” he added.
Bogdanović did not retract his statement; on the contrary, he insisted that mistakes still happen. “If we wanted to go into detail, we could. They make mistakes too. Of course, I’m not generalizing, but the majority lacks concentration, and that’s when situations like this happen,” he said.
