As an opportunity to “build” a new political culture and a new political ethic in Cyprus, political analyst Vasilis Protopapas views the developments surrounding the findings of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authorityregarding Makarios Drousiotis’s book “Mafia State,” which attributes potential criminal offenses to former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and 14 other individuals and legal entities.

Speaking on the “Alpha News” program, he explained that political party leaders should criticize and condemn cases of corruption and collusion with the same vigor and intensity, whether they involve their own political camp or another. In particular, he cited as an example the clear statements made by DISY Parliamentary Spokesperson Dimitris Dimitriou in a podcast, in which he stated that former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades must stay away from the state’s collective bodies and that officials should not accept gifts. Similarly, DIKO’s Chrysis Pantelidis demanded resignations from the government—in which his party participates—over the “Videogate” scandal.

“For the public to listen to us and for us to maintain credibility, we must offer fair and impartial criticism on all issues.”

Adonis Pigassios, Academic Director at the European Institute of Management and Finance, recalled that at the beginning of his decade-long term in office, Nikos Anastasiadisthe Code of Ethics for members of the Cabinet, which, as it appears, “was never implemented” in order to protect himself and the institution.

Nikos Christodoulides is also applying his own Code of Ethics today, and in fact has the distinguished judge Arestis as his advisor, who volunteered his services but remains underutilized.

“For example, the appointment of criminal investigators by the Council of Ministers, which is chaired by the President—who, like the Attorney General, has similar ties to Anastasiades. Has the Advisor been asked to give his own opinion? Can he recuse himself from the appointment process? Will we come back in two months and say that we don’t trust the findings because the President appointed them?”
