Alpha sources report the difficulty in finding independent criminal investigators to take on the investigation of potential criminal offenses involving Nikos Anastasiadis, based on the findings of the “Mafia State” report.

Some of the lawyers contacted by the government declined, citing personal or professional relationships or disputes with Nikos Anastasiadis and his law firm, while others expressed reservations due to the subject’s status as a person under investigation.

The “ball” is in the Cabinet’s court

The discussion has now moved to the Cabinet, where various candidates have been proposed and the framework for the appointment has been established.

“There has been an exchange of views regarding qualifications, and an initial list of names was presented. Individuals are already being sounded out, and names are under consideration. Each member of the Cabinet may submit their own recommendation.”

Following the recusal of the Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General, and the Prosecutorial Council, the process has stalled, as the investigation cannot proceed until the Cabinet makes its decisions.

The “ball” for drafting the terms of reference for the appointment of investigators is now in the Legal Department of the Ministry of Justice, and it is not out of the question that a a figure of recognized standing from abroad—possibly from Greece—who is also fluent in the language. The team will also consist of lawyers and possibly a former judge.

“It is difficult to convince the third-party observer that a Cypriot lawyer is independent. Therefore, it is essential to have a third party from abroad to lead the team.”
