The executive arm of the Peace Council will meet in Cyprus next week which is tasked with reconstruction in Gaza, according to Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis, speaking from the studio of the Alpha Kalimera program.

He notes that there is a dual, parallel process within the Peace Council.

“The Peace Council concerning Gaza and the Peace Council involving certain figures mentioned by President Trump. The administrative arm, with exclusive authority over the objectives and agenda for the reconstruction of Gaza, based on President Trump’s plan, which is grounded in United Nations Resolution 2803. This administrative arm has chosen our country.”

Mr. Letympiotis also notes that Cyprus was chosen as the most suitable venue due to its geographical location, emphasizing that the Republic is neither co-organizing nor directly participating in the summit, but will facilitate contacts, while the Minister of Foreign Affairs will hold meetings with participating officials. When asked if we were consulted, he states that the country was chosen.

“They have chosen Cyprus for reasons of their own, which we believe we can understand, along with the context of those reasons. The Republic of Cyprus is neither organizing nor co-organizing the event. Nor will we participate in it. Several of the dignitaries and officials who will be in our country on the occasion of their visit here have requested to meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, during which, of course, the issues to be addressed at the Summit will be discussed. I would like to remind you that President Trump’s plan for the reconstruction of Gaza was a topic of discussion; we participated in that first Summit where the plan was presented.”

He also recalls that President Christodoulides had submitted an 8-point plan that addressed some of President Trump’s points regarding how they could be put on track for implementation more quickly.

“Now we see attention turning once again—with the same intensity, or perhaps a revised intensity—toward Gaza. This is something we’ve said from the very beginning: while we recognize the intensity of political and geopolitical developments in our region—particularly following the events in Iran— we must never take our eyes off Gaza. And we, as a country, have proven this.”

He clarifies that our participation as an observer does not entail any contribution. He also notes that this development reaffirms Cyprus’s role in the region, with the government emphasizing that the international community’s attention must not be diverted from the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
