An unimaginable family tragedy lies behind the death of 64-year-old Amy Steadman, her 44-year-old daughter Sarah Myers, and her four children, who were found dead in a home in New York, as police concluded that the 64-year-old was the perpetrator, who poisoned herself, her daughter, and her grandchildren because the children’s father had been granted custody of them.
As a police spokesperson announced on Thursday, a handwritten note was found in the home that “strongly suggests” that the 64-year-old grandmother was “involved” in the deaths of her daughter and her four grandchildren: 13-year-old Harper, 11-year-old Hudson, and the 10-year-old twins, Gavin and Gracelyn.
According to the same statement, one of the children had a stab wound, while the other three had been poisoned.
“Evidence recovered from inside the apartment suggests intentional poisoning—including numerous prescription and over-the-counter medications,” said the police spokesperson, noting that there is no evidence of anyone else’s involvement.
Sources told Channel 13 that the children were injected with syringes found inside their grandmother’s home.
All five who were found dead had been “dead for a long time” and their bodies were in a state of decomposition when, on Tuesday evening, a neighbor who had not seen the 64-year-old woman for several days called the police.
Police sources reported that Stedman was outraged by the decision to grant their father, Brady Harmon, a decision that was set to take effect this coming Wednesday.
Harmon, who hasn’t seen the children since 2019, was eagerly preparing for their arrival at his home in Utah until police officers knocked on his door to deliver the heartbreaking news on Tuesday.
“I went from ‘I’m going to see my kids’ to ‘I’ll never see my kids again,’” he said, expressing his anger toward his 64-year-old former mother-in-law: “I hope she goes to hell. Things happen, but nothing like this.”
Harmon also accused his ex-wife of keeping the children away from him and allowing FaceTime only occasionally.
