The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), which sent an official letter to FIFA protesting the disallowed goal by Vinícius Júnior.
Despite the “Seleção’s” 3-0 victory, the Brazilians believe that the VAR intervention on the play leading to the Real Madrid star’s second goal did not comply with the criteria applied so far in the tournament.
In its letter, the CBF asks FIFA to ensure consistency in the application of the regulations regarding VAR interventions, emphasizing that the tournament’s philosophy to date has been to intervene only in cases of clear and obvious errors.
In fact, to reinforce its position, the Brazilian federation cites the play leading up to Lionel Messi’s first goal in the match between Argentina and Austria, arguing that in a similar situation, there was no VAR intervention.
According to the letter, the decision to disallow Vinícius’s goal came as a surprise not only to the Brazilian delegation, but even the Scottish players, who did not expect the play to be reviewed.
The CBF makes it clear that its goal is not to change this specific decision, but to ensure that the same criteria are applied consistently, transparency, and fairness for all teams throughout the World Cup.
At the same time, the Brazilians expressed their reservations regarding the appointment of Mexican referee César Arturo Ramos, citing the history of the match against Switzerland at the 2018 World Cup, when they had once again filed an official complaint with FIFA regarding the refereeing decisions.
