Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Transportation, who met yesterday for the first time in their new composition, members of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport were briefed during their first meeting in their new composition, held yesterday following the elections for the House of Representatives.
According to explanations given in Parliament, the new monitoring system on Cypriot roads will focus on enforcing speed limits, red-light violations, seat belt use, and cell phone use.
Committee member and DISY MP Charalambos Pazaros said on the Alpha Kalimera show that, in addition, there are plans to install cameras at highway entrances and exits that will calculate the time it takes a driver to cover a specific distance.
“Someone might be driving at 200 kilometers per hour, stop at a bakery to pick up food, spend 7–8 minutes there, and still arrive on time.”
Mr. Pazaros noted the need to protect public funds and stressed that the state should not become a mere collector of fines.
