The destruction caused by the twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale that "struck" Venezuela, leaving behind a massive death toll and thousands of missing and injured people.
Vasilis Karastathis, Director of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, explained on the Alpha News program that the two powerful seismic tremors, occurring just 40 secondsapart, are a rare and unique natural phenomenon, recorded only once every few hundred years.

When asked whether Greece and Cyprus might face similar seismic activity, Mr. Karastathis noted that both countries are located on active tectonic plates, but are not exposed to earthquakes of that magnitude.
He noted that cities and buildings are constructed according to strict earthquake-resistant standards and regulations, in contrast to Venezuela, where substandard materials are used and there is widespread unregulated construction.
