“AKEL will continue to fight against institutional collusion and corruption, which have skyrocketed during the Anastasiades–DISY government.” Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL Secretary-General
“The only thing we will not accept is AKEL’s criticism and attacks, given that, with its own shameful history of disregarding findings that concerned it—and even disregarding court rulings— cannot lecture us on sensitivity.” DISY
The confrontation between Democratic Rally and AKEL remains as intense as ever, while everyone awaits the next steps regarding the investigations that will follow the findings on the “Mafia State”
Clash over corruption
Pindarou calls on the President of the Republic to immediately appoint criminal investigators to clarify all the issues raised in the Anti-Corruption Authority’s report.
And in the very next paragraph, she turns her fire on Ezekia Papaioannou, in the wake of statements from the Leftist party regarding institutional collusion by the Democratic Rally during Nicos Anastasiades’ administration.
“The sins that AKEL is trying to reverse are no small matter. Thirteen lives were lost in Mari, and they pinned the blame on a minister; in the economy, they ruined tens of thousands of families and thousands of businesses. As for their scandal in Dromolaxia, it was perhaps the most imaginative scheme in the history of the Republic.” DISY
A short while earlier, speaking before the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou had referred to the role of the Democratic Alarm Party regarding issues of corruption, lumping President Christodoulides in with the rest—as —according to Stefanos Stefanou—the policies of Nicos Anastasiades.
“The Christodoulides government, despite its proclamations of zero tolerance for corruption, is not only failing to take action to change the situation by restoring the rule of law and institutions, but is continuing along the same lines as the previous government.” Stefanos Stefanou, Secretary-General of AKEL
He added that AKEL will strive to change these mindsets in the 2028 presidential elections.
