Lionel Messi continues to redefine the boundaries of soccer history. The Argentine captain scored yet another historic goal at the 2026 World Cup, bringing his total to 19 goals in World Cup tournaments and extending his already unmatched record as the all-time leading scorer in the tournament’s history.
The 39-year-old superstar came on as a substitute in the match against Jordan and needed just a few minutes to make his mark once again, scoring with a masterful free kick. It was his sixth goal in this year’s World Cup, a feat that puts him in sole possession of first place in the race for the tournament’s “Golden Boot.”
His latest achievement, however, didn’t stop there. With this goal, Messi became the first player in history to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches, leaving behind Zist Fontaine and Zairzinho, who had stopped at six consecutive matches. The Argentine’s streak began at the World Cup in Qatar and continues uninterrupted into the 2026 tournament.
At the same time, Messi continues to break one record after another. He is already the player with the most appearances (29), the most wins (19), and the most goals in World Cup history, and he also became the first player to score 19 goals in the tournament’s knockout stages.
As if all that weren’t enough, his goal against Jordan was also his sixth from outside the box in a World Cup, a feat that also sets a new tournament record.
With six goals already in this year’s tournament, the captain of the “Albiceleste” sits atop the scoring table and is chasing yet another personal milestone: to win the World Cup “Golden Boot” for the first time in his career, adding yet another major accolade to his legendary career.
