The Fire Department is warning of an increased risk of wildfires in certain areas, as gale-force winds of up to 8 Beaufort are forecast.
According to the fire risk forecast map for tomorrow, Sunday, the National Meteorological Service (EMY) identifies a risk in the following areas:
Very high risk (Level 4) in:
- Attica, Kythira
- Euboea, Skyros, Boeotia
- Argolis, Corinthia, Messenia, Laconia
- Lesbos, Chios, Psara
High risk (Level 3) in several regions of the islands and the mainland.
The fire department reminds the public that when a fire alert is in effect:
Do not burn trash, dry grass, or branches
Do not light outdoor grills
Avoid hot work
Do not throw away lit cigarettes
DO NOT LIGHT FIRES FOR ANY REASON
Yesterday, five people were arrested and fined heavily because, while a fire alert was in effect, they were performing hot work or barbecuing, causing fires.
The arrests took place in Fthiotida, Serres, Eastern Attica, and Rhodes and involved cases of negligent arson and violations of prescribed fire safety measures.
