Lionel Scaloni appears set to remain at the helm of the Argentine national team for many more years, as according to reports from Argentina, there is already a verbal agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to extend their contract through 2031.
As journalist Diego Monroig revealed on ESPN Argentina, discussions between the national team coach’s camp and the AFA took place before the start of the 2026 World Cup, with both sides reaching a verbal agreement.
However, Scaloni himself does not wish to discuss his future while Argentina is still competing in the World Cup. His intention is to remain fully focused on the team’s efforts, and the final negotiations to formalize the agreement are expected to take place immediately after the tournament concludes.
The 47-year-old coach has been at the helm of the “Albiceleste” since 2018 and has presided over one of the most successful eras in the national team’s history. In 99 matches, he has recorded 72 wins, 18 draws, and just 9 losses, with a win percentage of nearly 79%.
At the same time, he has led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments, and the 2022 Finalissima, restoring the team to the pinnacle of world soccer.
At the 2026 World Cup, Argentina’s run continues in the same impressive fashion. Scaloni’s team finished the group stage with a perfect record, defeating Algeria, Austria, and Jordan, securing first place in the group and advancing to the Round of 32, where they will face Cape Verde.
Provided that the verbal agreement is formally converted into a contract after the end of the World Cup, Scaloni will remain at the helm of Argentina through 2031, with the opportunity to lead the “Albiceleste” to both the 2030 World Cup and subsequent major international tournaments.
