California is in the midst of World Cup fever, but a tragic incident that occurred at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday in the San Jose area has cast a shadow over the festivities.
According to police authorities, one person was killed and another seriously injured after shots were fired at an entertainment venue hosting the World Cup “fan zones.” One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition; police report that the case is being investigated as a homicide, and roads in the area have been cordoned off.
More specifically, the incident occurred in “San Pedro” Square, an area that has so far hosted five World Cup matches, the most recent being the knockout match between Bosnia and the U.S., on the positive side, no match was being broadcast at that time, and the number of people who witnessed this bloody incident was limited.
A Reuters reporter at the scene reported a heavy police presence, numerous patrol cars, and an injured person on a stretcher—partially covered with a white sheet—who was being rushed away from the scene by uniformed officers.
The area was cordoned off, and most of the bars in the vicinity closed following the incident.
In fact, a security guard—who did not wish to be named as she was not authorized to speak to the media—stated that she saw the injured man in severe pain.
