Fires that broke out at dawn in Mathiatis and early in the morning in Vasa, Kellaki, have been brought under control, according to the Forestry Department.
As stated in a Department press release, the first fire broke out at 12:05 a.m. in the “Pervolia” area. “The fire, which had two separate hotspots, was brought under full control at 1:30 a.m., after burning one decare of reed beds and low vegetation,” the statement notes.
Four members of the Forestry Department with two fire trucks and six members of the Fire Department with two fire trucks were deployed to extinguish the fire.
In a second incident, the report adds, a fire broke out at 07:20 in an area of the Vasa Kellaki community.
“Thanks to the immediate response of the forest firefighting forces, the fire was brought under control at 7:50 a.m., before it could spread,” the report states.
Six members of the Forestry Department, equipped with two fire trucks, two members of the Fire Department with one fire truck, and two members of the Game and Wildlife Service with one fire truck. The causes of the two fires are under investigation.
