With the sentencing of the 27-year-old mother to life imprisonment plus 23 years and 9 months, and the 45-year-old former partner, the high-profile trial for the murder of 3-year-old Angelos—which had shocked the entire nation—came to a close.
The Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion unanimously found both defendants guilty of manslaughter committed in concert while in a calm state of mind, causing bodily harm and aggravated assault as accomplices, as well as endangering a minor. At the same time, they were convicted of the use and possession of weapons, in connection with the items found in the home.
The court imposed an additional conviction on the 45-year-old man for the collection and recording of personal data, while acquitting him of the charge of drug possession. Similarly, the 27-year-old mother failed to convince the court of her claim for diminished responsibility, which was rejected.
The court adopted the prosecutor’s recommendation and rejected the defendants’ requests for mitigating circumstances, both regarding their prior law-abiding conduct and their good behavior while in pretrial detention.
