The International Festival of Ancient Drama Brings "Lysistrata" to Cyprus

Directed by Asterios Peltekis
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The National Theater of Northern Greece (KTHBE) presents Aristophanes’ comedy *Lysistrata*, directed by its Artistic Director, Asterios Peltekis, at the Ancient Theater of Kourion on July 17 and 18, 2026.

Elisavet Konstantinidou plays the title role, supported by an exceptional cast of leading actors and supporting cast members, including Katerina Papoutsaki, Kratéros Katsoulis, Alexandra Palaiologou, Panagiotis Petrakis, Nikos Georgakis, Kostas Santas, Giannis Harisis, Sofia Kalemkeridou, and a host of actors from the National Theater of Northern Greece’s ensemble.

The National Theater of Northern Greece’s production offers a contemporary stage interpretation that, through Aristophanes’ humor and satirical power, highlights with genuine “comic” seriousness the decay and entropy of a society, while simultaneously highlighting the need for peace and a collective fresh start.

Lysistrata is not merely a comedy about war and love, but a deeply political and human-centered work that focuses on the moment when a society, exhausted by decay, seeks a new way of being. The city-state is in a state of prolonged disintegration: war has become an end in itself, politics has been severed from human experience, and the body has been banished from public discourse. Entropy emerges as a central metaphor for a system’s inability to halt its own decline.

The archetypal heroine proposes neither reforms nor new institutions. She introduces something radically different: the reemergence of the body, desire, and collective responsibility as a political act. Sexual abstinence is not an act of punishment, but a conscious suspension—a temporary “freeze” that makes it possible to restart the world
