An alarm was raised with Israeli authorities when a pilot for the Bulgarian airline Electra Airways, who was flying from Warsaw to Tel Aviv, accidentally activated the hijacking alert from the cockpit.
Shortly thereafter, the aircraft’s captain reported that there was no security incident and that the activation of the signal was due to human error.
Despite this clarification, Israeli authorities activated the prescribed security protocols. Air Force fighter jets were scrambled, and a decision was made to divert the aircraft, which was carrying 180 passengers.
The pilot requested permission to land in Cyprus, but his request was denied because the airport could not accommodate the flight due to heavy traffic.
Ultimately, the aircraft headed for Sofia, Bulgaria, where it is expected to land.
According to a statement from Israeli security services, there is no indication that this was a genuine security incident or a terrorist act.
