The Greek Prime Minister extended his warm congratulations on her reelection and his best wishes for every success in her work to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Anita Dimitriou, during their meeting today, Tuesday, in Athens.
At the same time, Mr. Mitsotakis congratulated the Republic of Cyprus on what he described as an exceptionally successful Presidency and added that at the last European Council it was clear that a tremendous effort had been made to finalize extremely complex dossiers, and there was universal recognition of the workof Cyprus.
The Greek Prime Minister noted that Ms. Dimitriou’s visit is taking place at a critical juncture, where there is once again substantial momentum on the Cyprus issue, and said that it is the duty of both countries to remain fully coordinated.
For her part, Ms. Dimitriou noted that the parliaments have a crucial role to play, both through parliamentary diplomacy as well as through stronger ties between the committees, particularly on issues that concern the interests of both countries, such as defense, security, and European affairs.
“We have seen your support in action, both following the incident we experienced in Cyprus and throughout all these years. I say this with great pride, conveying, if you will, the sentiments of the Cypriot people, because Greece was, is, and will remain our strongest brotherly ally, whom we need so very much,” said Ms. Dimitriou. At the same time, she noted that the Parliament will set its own priorities, always in cooperation with the Hellenic Parliament.
Regarding possible developments in the Cyprus issue, Ms. Dimitriou said that efforts at this time are focused on making progress on the Cyprus issue as well as on the issues and challenges that we are called upon, as she put it, we are called upon to manage at the European level. “We hope that we will see the momentum that will ensure real progress on the Cyprus issue. This is precisely where we want to discuss both the Euro-Turkish dimension and the other challenges as they unfold in the region,” he concluded.
