A thriller right up to the last minute regarding the appointment of independent criminal investigators who will take on the difficult task of conducting a criminal investigation into the findings regarding the “Mafia State.”
At the Presidential Palace, officials were on the line until late afternoon, awaiting the response —positive or negative—from renowned Cypriot legal experts and criminal law specialists who had been approached by the President of the Republic himself and had requested time to make a decision.
Ultimately, the responses most people had anticipated were negative, forcing Nicos Christodoulides to postpone the Cabinet meeting by 24 hours.
The postponement of the Cabinet meeting until Thursday gives the government some breathing room to make further adjustments so it can finalize the names and close the chapter on the appointment of investigators within the next 48 hours.
Greek Head
What appears to be finalized is the name of the head of the investigations. If the process is completed immediately, the name of a distinguished legal expert from Athens is expected to be announced on Thursday; he will be assisted by a small number of Cypriot legal experts, while it is not out of the question that one of the four inspectors from the Anti-Corruption Authority who investigated the case might also be appointed.
At the same time, the terms of reference have been finalized; they will be broad in scope, covering everything over a long period of time, and the timeframe for completing the investigations is also expected to be set.
