Kylian Mbappé continues to break one record after another at the World Cup. The French captain was the undisputed star of the 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, scoring two goals and making history.

With his first goal late in the first half, the 27-year-old forward reached nine goals in World Cup knockout rounds, surpassing Brazilian legends Leonidas and Ronaldo.

Shortly thereafter, with his second goal of the match, he raised his total to 10 goals in the knockout stage, further extending his historic record.

At the same time, the Real Madrid star has now scored six goals in this year’s World Cup, tying Lionel Messi at the top of the race for the tournament’s “Golden Boot.”

Even more impressive is the fact that Mbappé has scored 18 goals in just 18 World Cup final-stage appearances and is now just one goal away from the all-time record of 19 goals held by Lionel Messi, having played eleven fewer matches than the Argentine superstar.

France put on one of its best performances of the tournament. Bradley Barcola scored the second goal, while Michael Olise recorded two assists, bringing his tournament total to five—the highest total at a World Cup since 1994.

Didier Deschamps’ team, which returned to the bench after his absence in the final group stage match, celebrated its most lopsided victory in a World Cup knockout match since the 1998 final against Brazil and is now turning its attention to the big showdown with Paraguayfor a spot in the quarterfinals.
