Chelsea announced its first signing since Xabi Alonso took over as manager.
The London club acquired Marco Palestra from Atalanta for 54.7 million euros, with the 21-year-old Italian right back signing a contract through 2033.
“I’m really excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy from the very first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to get started, to see all the fans, my teammates, and the coach. We have so many talented players here, a very strong team, and Chabi as our coach. He’s talked to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League,” said Palestra.
He had an outstanding season on loan at Cagliari this past season, making 37 league appearances and contributing to five goals, earning the Serie A Defender of the Year award. He made his debut for the Italian national team in the World Cup playoff semifinal against Northern Ireland in March.
