With a splendid event, the Democratic Alarm today celebrated 50 years of playing a leading role in the country’s political affairs.
A journey, according to the party, “intertwined with the modern history of Cyprus, based on the enduring vision of the party’s founder, Glafkos Clerides, for progress and prosperity, centered on his political philosophy regarding the Cyprus issue, which is encapsulated in the maxim: ‘I will not hand over the homeland diminished.’"
In his remarks at the event, the President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Mr. Manfred Weber, noted that the 50th anniversary of DISY, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the EPP, is a milestone and a moment we must look back on with pride, honoring the pioneers while looking ahead to the future with a sense of responsibility.
On behalf of the Prime Minister of Greece and President of New Democracy, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Minister of Education, Ms. Sofia Zacharaki, delivered a greeting, while the presidents of the affiliated organizations—DISY, OPREPO, GODISY, Panagrotikos, NEDISY, Protoporia, and MAKI—sent their own messages.
In her speech, President Annita Dimitriou noted that Glafkos Clerides and the leaders who shaped the course of the Democratic Rally from 1976 to the present, a particularly difficult period following the Turkish invasion, left behind not only a party legacy but also a political legacy of values: “It left us a political ethos. It left us a way of thinking. It left us the commitment to place our homeland above the party, above individuals and personal ambitions.”
He emphasized that the Democratic Rally has consistently played a leading role in critical national decisions that have shaped the country’s modern course, making special mention of Cyprus’s European path, economic development, institutional stability, and Western orientation.
Particular emphasis was also placed on the visionary principles of the Party’s Founding Declaration, with references to democracy, freedom, parliamentarism, and social justice.
At the same time, Ms. Dimitriou expressed her gratitude to the party officials, volunteers, and voters for the recent electoral success, which—as she noted—constitutes a mandate to continue a political agenda based on seriousness, respect for institutions, and accountability.
As she emphasized, these elements are directly linked to the Party’s steadfast stance in favor of the independence of institutions and the judiciary, and respect for the rule of law. She also emphatically stressed that the Democratic Alarm Party upholds the principles of transparency, oversight, accountability, and zero tolerance for any wrongdoing.
In her speech, Ms. Dimitriou also referred to the administration of Nicos Anastasiades, offering a positive assessment particularly regarding the handling of the economic crisis, the country’s return to growth, and the implementation of significant social and institutional reforms.
In closing, the President of the Democratic Rally reiterated that the liberation and reunification of Cyprus, based on United Nations resolutions and European principles, remains the top national priority, while she reaffirmed the party’s commitment to continuing its political action with a focus on security, social cohesion, and economic progress, and with future generations in mind.
With the slogan of continuing on this path for the next 50 years, “the Democratic Rally reaffirmed that it remains a force for stability, responsibility, and a vision for Cyprus.”
