Folarin Balogun was at the center of the United States’ victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup Round of 32, setting a rare and historic record.

The 24-year-old forward opened the scoring for the U.S., but in the 61st minute, he was sent off with a straight red card after a tackle on Tarik Muharemović. Initially, the incident was not penalized with a sending-off, but after a VAR review, referee Rafael Klaus reviewed the incident on the monitor and determined that it was a serious and dangerous tackle, resulting in a red card.

Despite being a man down, the Americans withstood the pressure and “sealed” the victory with a goal by Malik Tillman, advancing to the World Cup Round of 16, where they will face Belgium.

Balogun’s red card was accompanied by a remarkable feat. The U.S. forward became the first player to score and be sent off in a World Cup knockout match since Zidane in the 2006 final against Italy.

At the same time, he became only the fourth player in the tournament’s history to score a goal and be sent off in the same knockout match. Before him, only Garrincha in 1962, Ronaldinho in 2002, and Zinedine Zidane in 2006 had achieved this feat.

In addition, Balogun became the first U.S. soccer player to be sent off in a World Cup since Pablo Mastroeni and Eddie Pope, who were both shown red cards in the match against Italy in 2006.

The problems for the international forward don’t end there, as, according to reports from The Athletic, FIFA has confirmed that the U.S. Soccer Federation has no right to appeal the red card. As a result, Balogun will serve his suspension and miss the Round of 16 match against Belgium.
