The need to establish a clear framework for the ongoing evaluation and support of police officers, particularly with regard to the possession and renewal of their authorization to carry firearms, was highlighted to CNA by Stella Katsari, Vice President of the Cyprus Psychologists’ Association. 

In light of the recent tragic incident in Limassol, in which a police officer shot and critically wounded his wife with his service weapon and subsequently took his own life, CYPE asked Ms. Katsari to comment on the fact that psychological evaluations in the police force are conducted only at the time of recruitment.

“The state must establish a clear framework for the ongoing evaluation and support of police officers, particularly with regard to the issuance and renewal of firearms permits. This process is a necessary mechanism for prevention, enhancing professional competence, and ensuring institutional accountability.”

He noted that systematic individual and group psychological support “is particularly important for units that come into contact with vulnerable populations or are exposed to traumatic incidents and distressing material.”

Ms. Katsari told CNA that the more support professionals receive, the more their professional competence, the quality of their decision-making, and the protection of both themselves and the public are enhanced.

These services, she continued, should be provided by professionals registered in the “Register of Licensed Psychologists,” as stipulated by current legislation, ensuring a clear ethical and institutional framework of accountability.
