Two people were killed and dozens more were injured in a fire that broke out in the early morning hours at a general hospital in the city of Ludwigslust, in northern Germany, authorities announced.
A spokesperson for the authorities told the German Press Agency that the two victims were patients.
Earlier, the police had reported more than thirty injured, but the spokesperson reassured the public, confirming that none of them were in serious condition.
According to initial reports, the fire broke out in a patient’s room. It is unclear whether the deceased were in that specific room. Authorities quickly evacuated patients and staff from the building.

The roof began burning at 4:28 a.m. (local time; 5:28 a.m. Cyprus time), according to police. It is unclear how many people were evacuated from the hospital.
According to the hospital’s website, it has a total of 160 beds. It is the only one in the city.
Flames and smoke were still rising from the five-story building this morning. Outside, patients—some wrapped in blankets—were sitting on the grass in front of the hospital. Some were waiting in wheelchairs.
