The doctors at Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital made a titanic effort to save the leg of a 6-year-old boy, who was seriously injured in a car accident in Rethymno and was rushed to Athens.
A “bridge of life” was set up to transport the child from Crete to Attica. According to reports, the 6-year-old boy was riding on a scooter with his father when they collided with a car.
He was initially taken to the hospital in Rethymno; however, due to the severity of his injuries, it was deemed necessary to airlift him to Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital.
The child arrived at the hospital on Sunday evening and was immediately taken to the operating room, where he underwent a lengthy and particularly difficult surgery.
The doctors fought to preserve the functionality of his leg and avoid amputation. According to the same reports, the surgery was completed successfully; the child has been discharged from the operating room and is now in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit of Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital.
The efforts of the medical and nursing staff are considered crucial to the young patient’s recovery; he remains hospitalized under close medical supervision.
