“This is my last appearance, and this is my last match with the national team.”
With these words, Riyad Mahrez brought his time with the Algerian national team to a close, following their elimination in the World Cup Round of 32 by Switzerland (2-0).
The 35-year-old attacking midfielder, who has played for Al Ahli for the past three years, concludes his time with the national team with 40 goals and 45 assists in 119 appearances.
His greatest moment was winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, and in 2016 he was named African Footballer of the Year, the same year he played a key role in Leicester’s historic Premier League title run.
Four more league titles and a Champions League title (among other honors) followed while playing for Manchester City.
