The facility for unaccompanied minors in the Lycabettus area of Nicosia would accommodate a maximum of 30 people, a source from the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection told CNA when asked to comment on reactions from local residents, noting that “in any case, the project will not move forward.”
According to the same source, the facility was intended to house vulnerable individuals who were to be repatriated, and this specific facility would not serve as a permanent residence. He also noted that the building would be renovated and would be under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration, adding that the issue of a facility for unaccompanied minors in the area had never been raised.
Earlier, the Lycabettus residents’ group, in a statement released today, had expressed disagreement “with the Deputy Ministry of Migration’s intention to establish an Open Facility for Unaccompanied Minors in Lycabettus,” noting that there had been no prior notification to the residents directly affected, nor any public consultation.
It was further noted that the Deputy Ministry of Migration and the Government, without taking into account “the serious problems that may arise both for the nearby Lycabettus Elementary School and for the residents of the area, attempted, through expedited procedures, to establish a migrant facility,” and expressed their intention to pursue all legal means to support their position.
