As part of targeted and intensive operations that began on June 19, 2026, the Drug Enforcement Agency (YKAN) dismantled a ring involved in the import and distribution of large quantities of dried poppy capsules, specifically the opium poppy variety, and in solving a total of 17 related cases across Cyprus
The operations were carried out throughout Cyprus, with the primary aim of dismantling the networks involved in importing this specific type of narcotic and protecting citizens from the harmful consequences of its trafficking and use.
As part of the investigation into these cases, the Cyprus Anti-Narcotics Agency (YKAN) seized approximately 60 kilograms of the hypnotic drug and arrested 21 individuals, while two others are still being sought.
Of the 17 cases that arose, 16 have already been filed in court and referred to the Criminal Court for trial, while the 21 defendants are being held in custody pending trial.
During the investigation of the cases, testimony was obtained against three of the 21 defendants alleging that over the past three months they had imported additional quantities of opium poppy and were charged.
As part of the YKAN’s efforts to halt the importation of this specific type of narcotic, contact was made with a foreign company through which the packages containing the seized quantities had been sent to Cyprus. During this communication, relevant recommendations were made and measures were taken, resulting in the termination of the ability to ship such products to Cyprus.
The YKAN continues its operations with undiminished intensity, with the aim of identifying and dismantling drug trafficking and distribution networks, as well as preventing their importation into the Republic of Cyprus.
