“Firefighters brought nearly 70% of the fire’s right flank and are maintaining their goal of stabilizing the situation before the wind shift forecast for noon today,” the Catalan Fire Department stated in a press release issued this morning.

“The fire, which was likely caused by negligence, has burned approximately 22,000 stremmata of mainly forest vegetation,” they clarified, adding that a traffic ban has been imposed in seven municipalities in the area.

The fire broke out yesterday near the community of La Bisbal d’Emporda, close to Girona, about 20 km from the Mediterranean coast.

“We urge citizens to avoid traveling in the area,” the firefighters said.

Approximately 400 firefighters are on the scene working to bring the fire under complete control.
