The number of fires that have broken out in Greece over the past 24 hours has reached 60.
Specifically, the battle against the flames continues in Koufalia, Chalkidona; in Leipsydrio, Kilkis; and in Krestoni, Kilkis. In fact, shortly after 7:00 p.m., a message was sent via 112 to those in Krestoni to remain on alert.
In Krestoni, 32 firefighters are on the scene with a team of ground crews and 10 vehicles, while four aircraft and two helicopters are conducting periodic aerial operations.
Meanwhile, in Nea Kallikratia, the fire has been contained, and strong ground and air forces continue to work to fully extinguish it.

According to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the situation was particularly challenging in the Region of Central Macedonia, with a very high risk index (category 4), where 16 agricultural and forest fires broke out almost simultaneously, most of them after 12:30 p.m., causing a significant dispersion of available firefighting resources.
The most challenging of these broke out within or very close to residential areas, such as in Neoi Epivates, Thessaloniki, and in Nea Kallikratia, Chalkidiki.

In Attica, where the fire danger index was at level 3, the fires that broke out in Aspropyrgos, Spata, and on Saranta Martires Hill in the Municipality of Acharnes were immediately tackled through a strong mobilization of ground and aerial forces, preventing them from spreading extensively.
The fire that broke out in Grevena was brought under control, while the fire in Embonas, Rhodes, was contained.
In Corfu, the fire in Vasilika was brought under control, while just a few minutes earlier, firefighting crews had successfully contained a second fire in the Apros area, preventing it from spreading.
As the ministry states in its announcement, “today’s fires have proven once again that when a fire breaks out near settlements, the presence of cleared lots and open spaces is a critical factor in limiting its spread and creating safer conditions for residents and firefighters. A clear plot of land can prevent the fire from spreading from one property to another and buy valuable time for firefighters.”
Despite the heavy strain placed on the response system by the many simultaneous incidents, the immediate mobilization of ground and aerial forces resulted in most fires being contained in their early stages, it is emphasized.
It is noted that tomorrow, Sunday, July 5, a very high fire risk (category 4) in six regions of the country, while a high risk (category 3) is forecast for many other areas.
Civil Protection and the Fire Department urge all citizens to follow the authorities’ instructions, exercise extreme caution, avoid any activity that could cause a fire, and keep their properties and outdoor areas clear throughout the fire season. Prevention remains the most effective form of protection.
