Following the resignation of Christos Mylonopoulos, who stepped down amid a backlash over his previous involvement in the Focus case, objections are also being raised regarding his replacement on the five-member panel of independent criminal investigators for the “State Mafia” case. The candidate is the distinguished criminal lawyer Ilias Anagnostopoulos, whose nomination is set to be submitted for approval at next Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.
And while the objections regarding Mylonopoulos mainly concerned the fact that he had represented Michalis Zolotas in the Focus case, for Ilias Anagnostopoulos, they center on the role he played as Tal Dillian’s defense attorney in Greece, and regarding the wiretapping scandal, known in Cyprus as the “black van” case. He also served as Leonidas Bobolas’s attorney in the CHYTA/CHYTI scandal, as well as for Dinos Michaelides’s son in the Tsochatzopoulos case, which involved kickbacks from the purchase of Russian missile systems in Greece. ALMA refers to this as a fiasco.
ALMA
: “The latest developments surrounding the appointment of independent criminal investigators to probe the ‘Mafia State’ scandal confirm that the government and, above all, the President of the Republic, still fail to grasp the fundamental issues of conflict of interest and institutional credibility.”
The Lexology Index 2026 lists him among the world’s
leading experts in economic crime cases, while describing him as “a leader and authority in criminal cases involving corruption, fraud, money laundering, and white-collar crime.”
Professor Emeritus of Criminal Law at the Law School of the Kapodistrian University of Athens, Ilias Anagnostopoulos, played an active role as a civil prosecutor in the historic trial of the terrorist organization “17 November” in 2003.
KONSTANTINOS LETYMPIOTIS, Government Spokesperson: “The
message remains clear: the investigation will proceed objectively and with absolute respect for society’s demand that everything be investigated impartially.”
Vasileios Skouris
remains the head of the investigative team; he has announced that he will offer his services without receiving any compensation.
