The demographic crisis appears to be knocking ever more forcefully on Cyprus’s door, with the Archdiocese stepping forward with a new financial support plan to address the problem.
The data show that the fertility rate remains well below the replacement level, while the population is aging at a rapid pace, directly threatening the sustainability of the social system and, above all, our national identity.
The Archdiocese’s plan provides for financial support at various stages of a child’s life. More specifically, parents will be able to receive for each eligible child:
€1,500 upon baptism in an Orthodox church
; €1,000 on the day of enrollment in elementary school
; €1,000 upon enrollment in middle school
; €1,000 upon enrollment in high school
. Additionally, until the child turns 18, vouchers worth €100 will be provided for the purchase of food and/or basic necessities at Christmas on the 20th ofand €100 for Easter every Holy Monday.
Eligible families are those in which at least one parent is a Cypriot citizen, an Orthodox Christian, and the couple has been married in an Orthodox ceremony and resides permanently in Cyprus. The grant applies to the third and each subsequent child born on or after January 1, 2025.
Applications must be submitted within 30 days of the child’s baptism or enrollment in school. In addition to addressing the low birth rate and strengthening the country’s demographic potential, the Archdiocese’s plan also aims to increase the number of families within the country’s Greek Orthodox population.
