An unbelievable incident unfolded in Promachoi, Almopia, a remote mountain village in the municipality of Aridaia in Central Macedonia, when a 16-year-old girl suffered a cardiac arrest inside her home.
The family’s youngest daughter woke up when she heard her sister breathing heavily and alerted her parents. The mother, who had been trained by Kids Save Lives, reacted immediately; after realizing that her daughter was not breathing normally, she called for help and began CPR.

The father, for his part, called the emergency medical service (EKAV) and rushed to fetch one of the two defibrillators available in the village, while another trained volunteer from Kids Save Lives arrived on the scene to assist with CPR.
The defibrillator was applied in less than two minutes, and the 16-year-old began breathing again after the first shock. The National Ambulance Service (EKAV) picked her up alive 45 minutes later, due to the village’s remote location, and a marathon of transfers began to the Aridaia Health Center, Edessa Hospital, the Intensive Care Unit in Larissa, and finally to the Onassis Hospital in Athens, where she received a state-of-the-art implantable pacemaker-defibrillator.
The incident took place in mid-June, and after about two weeks, the girl returned home and is in excellent health. “Everything worked perfectly in the Chain of Survival, proving that trained citizens and defibrillators can make a difference, especially in rural areas, in remote areas, and on the Greek islands!” states “Kids Save Lives – Children Save Lives” in a related post.
