The mayor of Mandra–Eidyllia, Armodios Drikos, noting that the fire broke out under particularly difficult weather conditions, next to the old Athens-Thebes national highway.
As he stated in an interview with ERT, the fire started very close to residential areas, about 20 meters from the nearest houses; however, strong winds drove it toward mountainous and forested terrain, away from residential areas.
Thanks to the immediate response of the fire department, volunteers, and aerial resources, the homes near the point where the fire started were not endangered.
The mayor noted that powerful ground and aerial forces are engaged in the firefighting effort, while the municipal response system has been fully activated. At the same time, as a precautionary measure, seven homes in the Kassandra area were evacuated, primarily due to smoke and to protect public health.

Reports suggest the fire was started by a cigarette
Referring to the possible causes of the fire, the mayor mentioned reports that a cigarette was thrown onto the side of the road from a passing vehicle.
As he said, relevant complaints have already been filed, and the Fire Department’s investigative unit, in cooperation with the police, is reviewing witness statements and surveillance footage in order to determine whether these specific accounts can be corroborated.
“I’d like to believe that by 2026, no one will be throwing cigarettes or anything else out of their car,” he remarked.
