UEFA has entered into a head-on clash with FIFA, taking an official stance on the decision that allowed Folarin Balogun to play for the U.S. as usual, despite the automatic one-match suspension that had been imposed following his ejection.

The European confederation calls this an unprecedented development, emphasizing that FIFA has crossed “the red line,” as it challenged one of the fundamental rules of soccer.

According to UEFA, the automatic one-match suspension following a direct red card is not a matter of interpretation or discretion, but a fundamental principle of the regulations, which must be applied in all cases without exception.

At the same time, it points out that this specific decision sets an extremely dangerous precedent within the World Cup itself, as any similar case for the remainder of the tournament will now have to be handled in the same manner—a fact that, it argues, undermines the tournament’s credibility and fairness.

UEFA further emphasizes that the strength of soccer lies in the existence of common rules that are applied uniformly in every competition and in every country, expressing its surprise and strong disagreement with a decision it describes as unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable.

reads: “Yesterday’s decision to suspend, for a one-year trial period, the application of the automatic one-match suspension, following the red card received by player Folarin Balogun, has crossed the line.

Soccer, like any sport, is based on rules, which form the foundation of fair, honest, and transparent competition. Sometimes the rules are open to interpretation. In this particular case, however, they do not. The minimum automatic one-match suspension following a red card is not a matter of discretion, nor does it require a decision by any competent body to take effect. This is a fundamental principle of the regulations, which cannot be subject to exceptions, let alone during a tournament, when several other players found themselves in the same situation and served their suspensions as required.

When the certainty of the rules’ application is no longer guaranteed by the very guardians of those rules, then the integrity of the game is jeopardized and the credibility of the tournament is undermined. At the same time, such a decision sets a precedent for the rest of the tournament, as every similar case will now have to be handled in the same way, to the detriment of the tournament itself.

Soccer is the world’s most beloved sport because it is a beautiful game and because people trust it, knowing that it is played everywhere under the same rules. No tournament operates in isolation, and the World Cup, in particular, has the power to influence the sport itself—for better or for worse—on a global scale.

We express our surprise and disappointment at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable decision.”
