The Deputy Ministry of Tourism is promoting the creation of the “Easter Villages” starting in 2027, with the aim of further enriching the tourism product and boosting visitor numbers to the countryside and mountainous regions of Cyprus.
According to an announcement by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the relevant “2027 Incentive Plan for Organizing Easter Experiences and Activities” was approved by the Council of Ministers last Wednesday, following a proposal by the Deputy Ministry. The program is aimed at municipalities and communities along the “Heartland of Legends” route, covering rural, mountainous, and remote communities.
As part of the Plan, ten (10) municipalities/communities will be selected to organize a comprehensive program of experiential activities from Holy Thursday through Thomas Sunday.
The events will include the preparation of traditional Easter dishes and handicrafts, the decoration of the Epitaphios, traditional games, guided tours led by licensed tour guides, lessons in traditional Cypriot dances, an introduction to Byzantine music and hagiography, as well as outdoor activities. Optionally, booths for the promotion and sale of local products may be set up.
According to Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis, the Plan aims to strengthen the tourism product during the Easter season, with a focus on attracting visitors to rural areas and supporting local communities, as well as preserving and promoting Cyprus’s cultural identity through authentic experiences.
Further information on the eligibility criteria and the application process will be announced at a later date by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.
