The European Parliament voted in favor of providing financial assistance to Cyprus, Spain, and Romania in response to the severe natural disasters they suffered in 2025.
Specifically, the European Parliament, with 642 votes in favor, 13 against, and one abstention, approved the allocation of 144.1 million euros to assist the three countries in addressing the effects of the severe wildfires and floods in 2025.
Following the two major wildfires that broke out in July 2025, Cyprus is expected to receive 9.21 million euros in aid.
Similarly, Spain will receive 120.55 million euros following the prolonged drought, intense heat waves, and numerous major wildfires, while Romania is expected to receive 14.34 million euros following the severe floods that occurred in May and June 2025.
Spain and Cyprus have already received advance payments (€30 million and €2.3 million, respectively) to support their initial recovery efforts. The EU’s support will help fund emergency response measures, including the restoration of essential infrastructure and public services, cleaning up disaster-stricken areas, and providing temporary shelter, rescue services, and other urgent recovery measures.
It should be noted that the 2025 wildfire season stands out as the most destructive on record.
The proposal had already been approved last Tuesday by the Budget Committee. The funds will come from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF).
