New doubts have been cast on the validity and objectivity of the criminal investigation regarding the findings of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority concerning Makarios Drousiotis’s book The appointment of Greek lawyer Anagnostopoulos to the five-member team tasked with carrying out this extremely important and difficult investigation casts a “Mafia State” shadow over the process. This is because Mr. Anagnostopoulos is the defense attorney for Israeli businessman Tal Dillian in the high-profile Predator case being tried in Greece, who is the owner of the black surveillance van that was roaming the streets of Cyprus.
Attorney Simos Angelidis explained on the Alpha News program that despite assurances from the President of the Republic himself that Anagnostopoulos’s appointment has been approved by the Anti-Corruption Authority, the question reasonably arises: Will the lawyer travel to Greece to defend his client, who is connected to former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and the Neocleous law firm, and will he return to Cyprus to investigate them?
“If and when he continues to participate, if and when the findings are finalized, he will be able to challenge them and claim they are tainted—precisely because of this particular relationship. I don’t understand the rush to insist on five people—why not four, or perhaps a fifth person altogether?”
Mr. Angelides suggested that the Cabinet should continue its search for a candidate with no connections and no direct ties to “key figures.”
“We’re talking about Anastasiades, Neocleous, and Dillian. So what’s going to happen? If an impediment is found during the investigation, will we say, ‘We’re stopping and not moving forward,’ and will the findings end up in the trash?”
