According to reports, the EAC unions have given the government a 15-day deadline, demanding substantive answers to the issues they have repeatedly raised, the most important of which is the adequacy and cost of electricity.

The decision was made following a meeting held on Tuesday afternoon at the Presidential Palace, attended by the union leaders, the Minister of Energy, the Deputy Minister to the President, and the Chairman of the EAC Board of Directors.

Following the meeting, according to the same sources, the unions decided to suspend the indefinitely the measures they had announced they would implement starting this coming Thursday, July 9, and which were estimated to potentially cause rolling blackouts.

It should be noted that earlier, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (CTSO) issued a press release informing the public that starting Thursday, July 9, 2026, there may be a need for rolling blackouts affecting consumers. It also noted that “due to these exceptional circumstances, the operation of the Competitive Electricity Market will be suspended for the duration of these measures.” Regarding the power outages, it states that “they are expected to last for as long as the measures remain in effect.”

However, the above measures are suspended until the 15-day deadline expires and the parties involved return to the negotiating table to decide on their next steps.
