A series of explosions rocked Kyiv in the early morning hours, according to Agence France-Presse reporters in the Ukrainian capital, on the second and final day of the NATO summit in Ankara.
The first explosion was heard even before the alarm sirens went off and was followed by at least four others, according to the AFP team.
The attack occurred one week after Russia’s deadliest strikes on Kyiv to date (30 dead) and two days after new deadly bombings (28 dead in Ukraine, 26 in the capital Kyiv and its surrounding region).
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that, according to initial reports, fires had broken out in two neighborhoods, before mentioning that two people had been injured, one of whom had to be hospitalized.
“The enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic missiles. Stay in shelters!” he emphasized in his initial message.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Ankara, where he was invited to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, urged his country’s allies to provide more air defense capabilities, particularly ammunition for Patriot systems, which, according to reports, have nearly been exhausted, making it impossible to intercept ballistic missiles.
More than four years after the Russian army’s invasion of Ukrainian territory, Russian attacks involving hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles are becoming increasingly frequent.
On the other hand, the Ukrainian armed forces, although equipped with fewer missiles, are also stepping up their attacks on Russia, primarily using unmanned aerial systems, seeking above all to strike at the oil production and trade sectors.
