CNN Fact Check: Trump's Five False Claims During His Meeting with Erdogan

What he said about Greenland, Biden, and investments in the U.S.
ALPHANEWSLIVE

President Donald Trump made a series of false claims during his remarks to the media on Tuesday, during his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, according to a report by CNN published today.

One of his most inaccurate claims concerned Greenland, the semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, regarding which Trump reiterated that the United States should take control of it. He falsely claimed, as he has done in the past, that the island is “surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships.” However, independent experts and the governments of various countries have made it clear that this does not correspond to reality.

Trump also repeated claims that have already been debunked, such as that he has “resolved eight wars,” that former President Joe Biden gave Ukraine “hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of equipment,” that since his return to office last year, “19.2 trillion dollars” or even more, and that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged.”

A breakdown of Trump’s claims

Greenland, Russia, and China

Trump stated that Greenland is “surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships.” However, there is no basis for this claim, which has been rejected in the past by independent experts, the Danish government and its armed forces, officials from other Nordic countries, representatives and residents of Greenland, as well as current and former U.S. officials.

In an interview published last month, the commander of the Danish military forces in the Arctic stated that, as is usually the case, no Chinese or Russian ships were detected in or around Greenland. P. Whitney Lackenbauer, a professor at Trent University in Canada P. Whitney Lackenbauer, an expert on Arctic security, had already told CNN in January that Trump’s claim was “completely fabricated,” and on Tuesday he reiterated via email that the claim “remains inaccurate.”

It is possible that Trump was briefed through classified intelligence on some limited Chinese or Russian naval activity near Greenland at some point. However, even that would not mean that the island was “surrounded.”

Trump and the Wars

Repeating one of his most frequent claims about international politics, Trump stated: “You know, I settled eight wars.” However, this is not true. The list of “eight wars” he cites has serious problems.

It includes two instances that were never actual wars during his tenure: the diplomatic dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia and an ambiguous situation between Serbia and Kosovo. In addition, it includes the conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has not ended, despite the peace agreement brokered by the Trump administration.

His list also includes the war between Israel and Hamas, even though Israel continues its attacks on Gaza almost daily, despite the ceasefire agreement reached through U.S. mediation. It even refers to the brief 2025 conflict between Israel and Iran, although Israel subsequently joined the United States in launching a new military conflict with Iran in 2026.

Biden and Aid to Ukraine

Referring to Ukraine, Trump again claimed that “when Biden was in office, he gave them hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of equipment.” This claim is a significant exaggeration.

According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, which closely monitors international aid to Ukraine, the United States had provided approximately $74 billion in military aid from late January 2022 through April 2026. In total, including economic and humanitarian aid, U.S. support amounted to approximately $132 billion.

Investments in the United States

Trump also reiterated his frequent claim that “we have investments totaling 19 trillion—19.2 trillion dollars, to be exact—in the United States.” This time, he added that this figure refers only to the first twelve months of his current presidential term and that the amount is now even higher, after nearly 18 months in office. However, even now, the figure of 19.2 trillion dollars does not reflect reality.

At the time he made that claim, even the official White House website cited investment announcements totaling $10.6 trillion, a figure that is also considered significantly inflated. A detailed CNN investigation had concluded that the calculation included vague commitments, agreements related to bilateral trade or economic cooperation, and general statements of intent, none of which constitute actual investments in the United States.

The White House figures include announcements from both U.S. companies and foreign entities. Meanwhile, official federal data released last month show that new foreign direct investment in the U.S. totaled approximately $232 billion in 2025.

The 2020 Election

Finally, Trump once again characterized the 2020 presidential election as “rigged.” However, this claim has been repeatedly refuted, as Joe Biden prevailed in an election process that was deemed lawful and valid.
