The best game so far in the 2026 World Cup was the one between Argentina and Egypt. It was a match that will go down in history, and until the 79th minute, it looked like a lost cause for the “Albiceleste,” as they were trailing 2-0. That is, until Lionel Messi took charge and, in less than a quarter of an hour, led his country to the heavens.
“La Pulga’s” performances and achievements on the fields of the Americas have been nothing short of spectacular. As is the fact that in each of the five games he’s played so far in the tournament, he’s set a record! This is a unique feat that, to our knowledge, has never been achieved before in World Cup history.
In Argentina’s opener against Algeria, the 39-year-old scored a hat trick and climbed to the top of the World Cup all-time scoring list, tying Miroslav Klose and breaking a record that until recently seemed “cursed”.
In the very next match against Austria, he scored two goals, which propelled him alone to the top of the all-time World Cup scoring list!
Of course, Messi also found the back of the net against Jordan, becoming the first player in the tournament’s history to score in seven consecutive matches!
Next came the dramatic match against Cape Verde, where the Argentine, of course, scored again. With that goal, he became the first player in history to score in every stage of the World Cup—in every group stage match and every knockout-round match!
Against Egypt, then, Lionel Messi found the back of the net once more. However, he also provided an assist to Cuti Romero, becoming the all-time leading assist provider in World Cup history, surpassing Diego Maradona.
