New details have come to light regarding the police chase that took place on Wednesday morning (July 8) in Argos, which resulted in the injury of the 20-year-old driver who attempted to evade a traffic stop.
During the on-site investigation at the scene of the incident, 13 firearm casings were recovered, while according to the radiologist, the 20-year-old is reported to have two head wounds caused by bullet fragments.
Ballistic analysis will determine whether the police officers’ shots were warning shots or direct shots.
In addition, bullet holes have been found in the wall of the abandoned building that the 20-year-old was attempting to climb.
The chase lasted 35 minutes, and according to reports, the police officers stated that, since they did not have visual contact, they fired warning shots in an attempt to get the suspect to stop.
The chase began when they determined that the vehicle the young man was driving belonged to a Russian woman, who, they claim, was later identified as the young man’s mother.
When the young man failed to stop at the checkpoint, the officers say they suspected he might be a burglar targeting homes or ATMs, and when he threw away the weapon—which was later determined to be an air gun— they intensified the pursuit.
What the Hellenic Police (ELAS
) Reports According to a statement from the Hellenic Police, the driver did not comply with the officers’ signals to stop, accelerated in an attempt to evade the checkpoint, and attempted to ram police officers who were outside their patrol cars, as well as patrol cars themselves, during his escape.
A chase ensued, and the vehicle was cornered by patrol cars, which, according to the Hellenic Police, he rammed. The driver then abandoned the vehicle on foot and attempted to escape by climbing over a retaining wall.
Two police officers opened fire, wounding him. An EKAV ambulance rushed to the scene and transported him to a hospital; he was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Attica, where he is currently being treated.
The 20-year-old
is known to the authorities. During his escape, near the spot where the police initially signaled him to stop, an air pistol was found and seized; it will be sent to the Criminal Investigation Division for laboratory analysis.
The driver is a 20-year-old with a criminal record who has been arrested once before after a brass knuckle, a bat, and a police siren—similar to those used on patrol cars—were found in his car.
The two police officers were arrested—an internal investigation is underway regarding the incident
. The prosecutor in charge was immediately notified of the incident, and as part of the arrest in flagrante delicto, the two police officers involved were arrested; charges are being filed against them for violating weapons laws and causing serious bodily harm.
At the same time, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated to investigate the exact circumstances under which the incident took place.
The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Nafplio Crime Investigation and Prosecution Department with the assistance of the Special Anti-Terrorism Unit (DAOE).
