An F-16 fighter jet made an emergency landing on Zakynthos after suffering a mechanical failure that caused a fire.
The Hellenic Air Force fighter jet had taken off from the 116th Fighter Wing in Araxos and was participating in an exercise when it experienced a malfunction and made an emergency landing at the nearest airport, which is the one in Zakynthos.
According to reports, the fighter pilot is in good health.
As soon as the aircraft landed, firefighting crews arrived immediately on the scene to deal with a fire, and as a precaution, they also sprayed special fire-retardant foam to prevent the fire from spreading.
The Hellenic Air Force’s statement:
“On Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 1:45 p.m., an F-16 aircraft from the 335th Squadron of the 116th Combat Wing, which was participating in a training flight, made an emergency landing at Zakynthos Airport due to a malfunction.
The pilot is in good health.
The causes of the incident are under investigation.”
