Commotion broke out around 7:00 p.m. in downtown Lamia, when two groups of minors got into a violent brawl on Riga Fereou Street near the Officers’ Club, in full view of passersby, workers, and store owners.
According to initial reports from LamiaNow, the incident occurred between two groups of youths, aged approximately 15 to 16. One group consisted of five Roma boys, while the second reportedly included four to five boys, and four girls were also present at the scene.
Under circumstances that remain unclear at this time, the two groups reportedly initially engaged in a heated verbal altercation. The situation, however, quickly escalated, with the youths coming to blows in the middle of the street.
As eyewitnesses told LamiaNow, during the altercation, blows were exchanged, punches, and kicks were exchanged, and the intensity of the incident even resulted in torn shirts and bloodshed. The incident caused significant commotion in the area, as there were people present at the time and stores were open for business.
Owners of nearby stores, as well as employees, rushed to intervene immediately in order to separate the minors and prevent the situation from escalating. However, according to the same eyewitness accounts, the tension was so high that those involved did not stop easily, despite the efforts of those present at the scene.
A short time later, the police were notified, and officers arrived on Riga Fereou Street. By the time they arrived, however, the young people involved in the incident had already left the scene.
In fact, according to eyewitness accounts reported to LamiaNow, after the altercation, it was reportedly heard that the two sides had rescheduled their “meeting,” a fact that raises further concerns.
The exact circumstances under which the incident began remain unknown, while authorities are expected to examine witness statements and available evidence to determine exactly what happened.
